Is there too much or too little energy?
Now the question changes: in the altered region, has energy been added or taken away? With the volume matched, telling this apart is harder than locating the band.
Adjusting the listening level
The volume is raised until the noise is heard clearly and comfortably. If a voice had to be raised to talk over it, it is too loud. Turning it up further does not improve any exercise.
