Miles Davis

1945 — 1991

Miles Davis is perhaps the most transformative figure in twentieth-century jazz. Born in Illinois in 1926, he arrived in New York to study at Juilliard, but soon abandoned the classrooms to play with Charlie Parker. He invented or reinvented practically every style of modern jazz: cool jazz with Birth of the Cool, modal jazz with Kind of Blue, considered the best-selling jazz album in history, fusion jazz with Bitches Brew. His trumpet sound, minimalist and charged with emotion, redefined what it meant to play an instrument. He was a restless artist, incapable of repeating himself, who lived three or four musical lives within a single one.
