Mitsubishi se fundó en 1870 como una empresa naviera por Yatarō Iwasaki, pero se expandió rápidamente a otras industrias, diversificándose en el Banco Mitsubishi, la Corporación Mitsubishi y Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. Tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial, el zaibatsu original se disolvió, convirtiéndose en empresas independientes que comparten el nombre y el logotipo de los “tres diamantes”. Hoy, Mitsubishi Motors, nacida de Mitsubishi Heavy Industries en 1970, es conocida por su legado de innovación en automoción, desde el primer automóvil de producción masiva de Japón en 1917 hasta los vehículos 4×4 y los modelos híbridos y eléctricos modernos
